6 Social Media Categories to Drive Engagement

Are you ever struggling to come up with ideas of what to post?

Think about dividing your content into social media categories. In this article I’ll explain 6 social media categories that are tested and proven to get engagement, connect and build trust with your audience and promote your products and services, without being too sales-y

When you regularly post content within these 6 categories, your audience will get familiar with your business in a natural way. They’ll get to know you better and learn how you can help them, which will make it more likely that they’ll want to work with you.

These categories serve as a guide for you to write your posts, so feel free to modify them so that it fits your business and your personality.

Let’s have a look at what they are.

  1. Entertain

Think about a funny meme you’ve recently seen, how did it make you feel? A lot of your audience are also on Instagram for fun. When you’re able to step out of your business role you’ll be able to connect to them in a way that makes them laugh, feel good and allow them to have a break from their usual day. This is something valuable we easily oversee. Think of sharing funny memes, GIFs, and other relatable content.

  1. Encourage

This is a type of post that is known to be shared and re-posted many times. Not so strange, considering that an encouraging or inspiring post can brighten your audience’s day. Think of sharing an inspiring quote, a daily affirmation, an uplifting story or how you get through a typical Monday morning.

  1. Build trust

Talk about things that build trust with your audience, this will make it more likely that they want to work with you or buy from you. Think of sharing how you position yourself in your niche, your guarantees, and share testimonials and experiences from others customers.

  1. Educate

This is where you share your expertise & knowledge and help your audience with solving their problems. Sharing your unique solutions to their needs will show that you understand them deeply. Think of sharing tips & tricks, FAQ’s, case studies, live training or links to your blog posts where you dive deep into certain topics.

  1. Connect

People don’t buy from businesses, they buy from people. This is where you show the person behind the business, you (or your team) and bring a personal  element to the front. Be real and authentic, but no need to hang your dirty laundry out 🙂 Think of sharing a behind the scenes, what your plans are for the weekend, or a personal insight you had.

  1. Promote

Even though sales are sometimes considered sleazy, it doesn’t have to be. You need to show what you do. Show your audience how your product or service will help them. Showcase your product or service by talking about the benefits of your product and service in organic content. Think about the positive feedback you got from a client, and how it affected their lives emotionally, talk about long-term benefits. This is also where you share your freebies, lead magnet, freebie and sale promotions.
